History

In 1999 Islington Council responded to lobbying by interested businesses at the
Angel and set up a working group looking at making improvements in the area,
who included Jack Morris owner of the Business Design Centre, Lou Segal owner
of Frederick’s restaurant in Camden Passage, and representatives from some
banks and chain retailers in the area.

In recognition that the Angel needed improving and that local businesses were
prepared to invest time and money in the area, the group was formalised. The first
town centre manager Martin Fletcher was appointed in 2001 and Angel Town Centre
was incorporated in 2001, funded by contributions from Islington Council and voluntary
payments from a few prominent businesses.

Angel Town Centre Management Group worked to improve the area until 2004 when
manager Christine Lovett proposed setting up a business improvement district to
ensure a sustainable financial future for its services. With London Development
Agency support, over the next two years ATCMG consulted and canvassed local
businesses, of whom 77% who voted said yes to the BID in the ballot March 2007.
